“Good wee film that’s a great refresher on what is the right things that should be done – and we all should always do the right thing for safety”
How can you use behaviours to elevate Health and Safety Comms?
Back in 2019, Scottish Water approached us to help with a project around humanising safety conversations. Since then, we’ve built a great partnership with the whole Health and Safety team, leaning into their H&S expertise and our communications specialism to head towards their crystal-clear goal:
To get everyone home from work safe.
You can’t have a safe working environment without Health and Safety comms. But who said it has to be clunky, unmanageable and uninspiring. Not us, that’s for sure.
In 2023, we created our first Safe Choices moment, our goal being to create a moment of emotional connection by showing how the real life consequences of poor choices play out.
The first Safe Choices moment was in the form of an interactive film, showing a typical Scottish Water employee, Mark, going about his day. As the day progresses, you have the opportunity to help him make decisions. With each of those decisions, we’re asking the viewer to make the Safe Choice given the context of the film. If you make the unsafe choice? See the impact that might have on Marks day. This was a truly engaging piece of content that continues to underpin onboarding, training and development programmes at Scottish Water.
We loved this idea of using content to elevate people’s focus out of the detail for a second and think about the human impact, and we’re going to create a ‘wow moment’ like this once a year to manifest the Scottish Water new BRIC (Bold, Responsible, Inspiring, Caring) behaviours.
Every year, we’ll be working to that same goal, to remind people why safety at work really matters.
And within year 1, they had a record breaking month, with 221 jobs stopped. Now we know that doesn’t sounds like a good thing. But it’s actually a key Health & Safety measure – it shows colleagues are spotting safety risks or hazards, and stopping their work to fix it. It’s a tangible measure of Safe Choices being made.
